GATESHEAD Legends and Newcastle Legends have announced four new players that will be taking part in the legends match at the International Stadium on April 7 2019.
Following on from last Monday’s announcement, Heed legends Ben Clark and Micky Cummins have recruited ‘Wembley season’ fan favourites John Oster and James Marwood to line-up alongside them.
Newcastle Legends have also announced ‘Entertainers’ era midfield stars, Rob Lee and Ruel Fox will be joining Peter Beardsley.
Oster and Marwood were key figures during the 2013/14 season as the Tynesiders claimed their highest ever National League finish of 3rd and were beaten play-off finalists.
Marwood famously netted a brace in the play-off semi-final against Grimsby in front of a packed International Stadium to help Gateshead reach Wembley for the first time in their history.
And after confirming his place on the Heed legends side, the 28-year-old forward commented: “It’s a privilege to play for Gateshead in a game against opposition who have achieved so much in their respective careers and have been very successful.
“Clarky just got in contact with me and said he’s getting the band back together and I just jumped at the chance to play a game again as it’s been four years!
“I can’t wait to line-up again with some old colleagues who are also still my good friends. It should be a great occasion and hopefully we can raise some vital funds for Gateshead as they continue their play-off push!”
Former Wales International and Sunderland midfielder Oster signed for the Heed near the start of that memorable season and went on to make 83 appearances for the Tynesiders over two seasons prior to his retirement in 2015.
“It should be a really fun game to play in,” Oster admitted.
“I still see some of the lads that played in my time at Gateshead anyway but I’ve not played for a few years now so I think I’ll have to get some sort of fitness done in the run-up – I’ll probably leave that until after Christmas though!
“I’m sure like most games of this nature, there will be a slight competitive edge, but when the game is finished it will be all smiles and handshakes no doubt.”
With 379 appearances and 56 goals for Newcastle, Rob Lee was one of the most influential Magpies midfielders of the 90s as he helped United to a First Division title, two Premiership and FA Cup runners-up spots as well as Champions League football for the first time.
After confirming his spot in the Newcastle Legends side, Lee said: “I am really looking forward to pulling on the boots for such a good cause.
“The fact its north-east derby means I will have to start training now because local pride is at stake!
“I hope the fans from both sides of the Tyne support the game.”
Ruel Fox joined Newcastle midway through their inaugural Premier League season as they claimed an admirable 3rd place finish – a feat yet to be bettered by a newly promoted side in the Premier League era. In his first full season in the North East, Fox netted an impressive 12 times from midfield to help the Magpies finish 6th.
He commented: “I’m looking forward to catching up with the lads. I’ve played in the last two games against Liverpool and Manchester United which saw us lose and draw so we will be going for the win this time!”
More legends will be announced in the coming weeks.
